Little Moreton Hall is owned and managed by The National Trust. Located south of Congleton in Cheshire, the property is Grade 1 Listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The building was constructed around the early-mid parts of the 1500’s with a further period of development in the early 17th Century. The Hall is one of the finest examples of a medieval moated Manor House in England. The building is described as being highly irregular with a long gallery running the entire length of the south range upper floor giving the property a top-heavy appearance.

As part of an ongoing programme of works, two chimney stacks were identified on the property requiring repair including the removal of cement based mortar which was causing further deterioration of the brickwork. The main chimney stack on the South Range (principal elevation) and a further chimney stack on the West Range were repaired under the first phase of works in 2024.

Cement mortar was replaced on both chimney stacks with a lime based mortar. During the re-pointing works, any deteriorated and eroded bricks were replaced with replacement hand made bricks supplied by York Handmade Brick Co. Stainless steel brick anchors were carefully inserted upon the South Range chimney stack in order to reduce progressive movement within the masonry stack identified as part of an ongoing programme of structural monitoring.

Both chimney stacks received a new sandstone capping detail to reduce water penetration within the now redundant stacks.

Evans Building Consultancy were responsible for gaining Listed Building Consent for works including producing detailed specifications and drawings to enable competitive tendering. Contract management was also undertaking during the works including managing the appointed Consulting Engineers for the project.
